چکیده

Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms densely packed in a honeycomb lattice with each carbon atom accommodating four valence electrons: one π electron and three σ electrons [1]. The lone unpaired π electron in the half-filled pz orbital would form a π bond with the neighboring carbon atoms leading to delocalized π bands. Three σ electrons, sp 2 -hybridized with neighboring three carbon atoms, form stronger σ bonds within the graphene layer. The π electrons play a predominant role in the electronic excitations below 10 eV while the σ electrons have important contributions at energies above 10 eV [1]. Furthermore, graphene is characterized by the signature linear dispersion of the π electrons near K, K’ points of the Brillouin zone (Dirac cone) [1].

Direct probe of linearly dispersing 2D interband plasmons in a free-standing graphene monolayer

In low-dimensional systems, a detailed understanding of plasmons and their dispersion relation is crucial for applying their optical response in the field of plasmonics. Electron energyloss spectroscopy is a direct probe of these excitations. Here we report on electron energy-loss spectroscopy results on the dispersion of the π plasmons in free-standing graphene monolayers at the momentum range...

Plasmon bands in multilayer graphene

High-energy collective electronic excitations (plasmons) in freestanding multilayer graphene are studied by momentum-resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). For normal incidence, only the high-energy plasmon band is excited and we measure a blueshift of the π -plasmon dispersion with increasing thickness. The observed transition between two-dimensional and three-dimensional behavior ...

Multiple plasmon excitations in adsorbed two-dimensional systems.

Using monolayer graphene as a model system for a purely two-dimensional (2D) electron gas, we show by energy electron loss spectroscopy, highly resolved both in energy and momentum, that there is a significant probability for the excitation of not only one but two dispersing losses. The appearance of both losses is independent of the substrate (we tested graphene on the Si face of 6H-SiC(0001),...

Spatially-resolved structure and electronic properties of graphene on polycrystalline Ni.

We have used in situ low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) to correlate the atomic and electronic structure of graphene films on polycrystalline Ni with nm-scale spatial resolution. Spatially resolved electron scattering measurements show that graphene monolayers formed by carbon segregation do not support the π-plasmon of graphene, indicating strong covalent bonding to the Ni. Graphene bilayer...

High thermal stability quasi-free-standing bilayer graphene formed on 4H-SiC(0 0 0 1) via platinum intercalation

Influences on electronic structure induced by platinum (Pt) deposited on monolayer graphene grown on SiC(0001) are investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), selected area low energy electron diffraction (l-LEED) and angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) techniques at the MAX Laboratory. Stable monolayer graphene electronic properties are observed after Pt deposition and afte...
